Umahi Launches 40-Man Coastal Highway Guards to Crack Down on Hawking, Okada, Vandalism

The Federal Government has launched a dedicated Coastal Highway Guards, with an initial deployment of 40 officers to protect and maintain order along the newly constructed coastal highway.

The initiative was launched today by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, who said the guards would provide a permanent security presence along the strategic national infrastructure.

The Coastal Highway Guards will be responsible for maintaining surveillance on the highway, reporting suspicious activities and monitoring incidents of vandalism or attempts to damage government infrastructure.

They will also enforce restrictions against hawking, loitering, commercial motorcycles (Okada) and tricycles (Keke) on the highway.

The team is headed by Retired General Adekunle Shodunke and is expected to work closely with security agencies operating in the respective states along the highway.

Speaking at the launch, Umahi stressed that the initiative should not be mistaken for an empowerment programme.

According to him, the guards have been recruited for a full-time responsibility to protect national assets, in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The deployment comes as the Federal Government seeks to safeguard the massive investment in the coastal highway and ensure that the route remains secure, accessible and free from activities capable of compromising its safety or damaging public infrastructure.
