Range Rover has thrown down the gauntlet in the luxury electric SUV market with the surprise preview of its all-new Range Rover Sport Electric, promising to redefine high-performance motoring when it officially debuts later this year.

The British luxury marque unveiled the highly anticipated electric performance SUV during an exclusive preview at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom, giving enthusiasts their first taste of what it describes as a new era of sporting luxury.

The unveiling comes on the heels of the forthcoming Range Rover Electric, making the Sport Electric the brand’s second fully electric model as it accelerates its transition into the zero-emission era.

Far from being just another electric SUV, Range Rover says the Sport Electric has been engineered to deliver more power, greater torque and an even more exhilarating driving experience, while retaining the muscular styling and all-terrain capability that have become hallmarks of the Range Rover Sport nameplate.

To demonstrate its credentials, the vehicle was put through a series of dynamic driving challenges on the famous Goodwood Motor Circuit, paying tribute to the model’s history of conquering extreme feats, including the legendary 999-step climb to Heaven’s Gate in China and the daring ascent of an Icelandic spillway.

According to the company, the all-electric SUV combines a sophisticated new chassis setup, advanced electronic technologies and a specially engineered sound experience to produce what it calls a uniquely visceral driving character, whether on tarmac or challenging terrain.

Managing Director of Range Rover, Martin Limpert, said electric propulsion takes the Range Rover Sport’s performance to an entirely new level.

“Electric power brings a new edge to Range Rover Sport,” Limpert said. “The preview at Goodwood Festival of Speed is only a glimpse of how this model will redefine performance SUVs later this year, combining the refinement and immediate performance of electric drive while further elevating the unmistakable character of Range Rover Sport our clients already know and love.”

With the arrival of the Sport Electric, Range Rover will complete one of the industry’s broadest premium powertrain portfolios, offering customers a choice of fully electric, plug-in hybrid, mild-hybrid V8 petrol, as well as six-cylinder petrol and diesel variants.

Although technical specifications remain under wraps, the automaker says the new model has been meticulously calibrated to preserve the thrilling driving dynamics that have made the Range Rover Sport the most performance-focused member of the Range Rover family.

Full details, including performance figures, battery specifications and market availability, are expected to be announced before the official global launch later this year.
