UNDER PRESSURE: Toyota Suffers Fourth Straight Monthly Sales Crash as China Market Meltdown Worsens

ANNIE ALLEN

Alarm bells are ringing at Toyota Motor Corporation after the world’s largest automaker recorded its fourth consecutive month of declining global vehicle sales, with a dramatic collapse in China and the Middle East dragging down the company’s worldwide performance.

Fresh data released by the Japanese automotive giant showed that global vehicle sales plunged by 7.2 per cent year-on-year in May to 834,279 units, raising fresh concerns about the growing pressures confronting even the industry’s most dominant players.

The biggest blow came from China, where Toyota’s sales nosedived by an astonishing 31.7 per cent amid fierce competition, weakening consumer demand and rapidly changing market dynamics. The Middle East market delivered another major setback, with sales crashing by 38.6 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Toyota’s overseas operations bore the brunt of the decline, with international sales falling by 9.6 per cent. In contrast, the automaker’s home market in Japan offered a rare bright spot, with domestic sales jumping by 11.1 per cent, driven by strong demand for popular models such as the RAV4 SUV and the battery-electric bZ4X crossover.

Even the United States, Toyota’s largest single market globally, was not spared, with sales edging down by 0.6 per cent.

The pain extended beyond the showroom. Toyota’s global vehicle production also fell by 5.5 per cent in May, as declining output in the United States and Asia offset production gains in Japan. Manufacturing output dropped by 3.8 per cent in the U.S. market, while production across Asia slumped by 13.3 per cent.

The latest figures, which include Toyota’s luxury Lexus brand, underscore the growing challenges facing global automotive manufacturers as they battle slowing demand, economic uncertainties and the relentless rise of Chinese automakers, particularly in the electric vehicle segment.

For Toyota, long regarded as the gold standard of the global auto industry, the latest sales slump is a stark reminder that no automaker, regardless of size or reputation, is immune to the seismic shifts currently reshaping the world’s automotive marketplace.
