Omoda, Jaecoo Hit 1.16m Sales, Challenge Established Brands

New automotive marques are rapidly moving from unfamiliar names to serious global contenders, with safety ratings, rising sales and expanding dealer networks fuelling their assault on established brands.

Omoda and Jaecoo are no longer simply newcomers knocking on the door of the global automotive market. With cumulative sales now exceeding 1.16 million vehicles in less than three years, the brands are rapidly emerging as formidable challengers to long-established automotive names.

The remarkable growth, based on company-reported figures, is being driven by an aggressive international expansion strategy, growing consumer acceptance and safety credentials that are helping the brands overcome one of the biggest barriers facing new automotive marques: consumer trust.

For buyers, particularly in markets such as Nigeria, an unfamiliar badge often raises difficult questions. Will spare parts remain available? Can the dealer provide reliable after-sales support? Will the vehicle retain its value? And, perhaps most importantly, will the manufacturer still be around to support the customer several years after purchase?

Omoda and Jaecoo are attempting to answer those questions through measurable market performance.

A major boost came from Euro NCAP, one of the world’s most recognised independent vehicle safety assessment organisations.

The Jaecoo 7 PHEV earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2025, following the Omoda 5’s five-star result under Euro NCAP’s 2022 assessment protocol.

The ratings are significant because Euro NCAP evaluates vehicles across several areas, including occupant protection, vulnerable-road-user protection and safety-assistance technologies.

For emerging brands, such independent recognition can be particularly important because it provides consumers with an objective benchmark beyond manufacturers’ own claims.

The brands’ growing popularity has been particularly visible in the United Kingdom.

In October 2025, the Jaecoo 7 was named Overall Car of the Year at the Leasing.com Awards, following strong enquiry volumes and performance in areas including market share and value.

By the end of April 2026, the Jaecoo 7 had accumulated 17,668 UK registrations, placing it third among the country’s best-selling new cars year-to-date, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders data.

The Omoda 5 also made its mark, ranking sixth among new models in April, while the Jaecoo 7 placed tenth.

Even more significant for a relatively young automotive brand was the composition of its customer base. Omoda & Jaecoo UK reported that approximately 40 per cent of April registrations came from private buyers, suggesting that the brands were gaining traction beyond fleet and commercial customers.

The momentum has spread rapidly to other markets.

In Portugal, where the brands commenced commercial operations in December 2025, they recorded 1,649 registrations during the first half of 2026 and established a 15-dealership network covering mainland Portugal and the islands.

Brazil has proved even more dramatic.

Since entering the Brazilian market in April 2025, Omoda and Jaecoo reportedly recorded 24,024 registrations by June 2026 and expanded their retail footprint to 100 sales points across 25 of Brazil’s 27 states.

Globally, the brands reportedly registered about 380,000 vehicles in the first half of 2026, representing 38 per cent year-on-year growth.

Their cumulative sales have now surpassed 1.16 million vehicles across more than 65 markets.

For the Nigerian automotive market, where brand reputation and after-sales support remain crucial considerations, the rapid international expansion could give Omoda and Jaecoo a powerful advantage.

The challenge, however, will be converting global success into sustained local confidence.

Strong safety credentials, growing international sales, adequate spare-parts availability, a dependable dealer network and effective after-sales support could determine whether the brands merely make an entrance into Nigeria or establish themselves as long-term players.

With more than a million vehicles already sold globally, Omoda and Jaecoo are sending an unmistakable message to established automotive giants: the newcomers are no longer waiting for acceptance. They are coming for market share.
