The Mercedes-Benz CLA EQ 250+ has emerged as the standout performer in Green NCAP’s latest sustainability assessments, proving that electric vehicles can combine luxury, long-distance capability and environmental responsibility without compromise.

The all-electric premium coupe secured an impressive five-star sustainability rating and an overall score of 91 per cent, outperforming hybrid and petrol-powered rivals tested by Green NCAP, the sustainability ratings partner of Euro NCAP.

In a result that challenges the belief that only small, lightweight EVs can achieve exceptional efficiency, the CLA EQ 250+ delivered remarkable energy consumption figures despite carrying a large 90 kWh battery pack and weighing nearly two tonnes.

Green NCAP said the Mercedes sets a new benchmark for electric mobility, combining outstanding aerodynamics, class-leading efficiency and ultra-fast charging to virtually eliminate concerns about range anxiety. The vehicle can travel up to 690 kilometres on a single charge under favourable conditions and still delivers up to 456 kilometres of range in harsh winter temperatures.

The CLA EQ also impressed with its rapid charging capability, replenishing its battery from 10 to 80 per cent in just 22.6 minutes, making it one of the most practical EVs for long-distance travel.

While the Mercedes dominated the rankings, the hybrid Toyota C-HR earned a respectable three-and-a-half-star rating, demonstrating strong real-world fuel economy and relatively low lifecycle emissions. However, Green NCAP noted that its cold-weather emissions performance prevented it from achieving a higher score.

The conventional petrol-powered MINI Cooper C managed a three-star rating, while the MG HS SUV lagged far behind, earning only one-and-a-half stars after recording high fuel consumption and lifecycle emissions.

According to Green NCAP Technical Manager, Dr. Aleksandar Damyanov, the results show how rapidly automotive technology is evolving.

He said Mercedes-Benz has demonstrated that motorists no longer need to choose between vehicle size, practicality and environmental performance, adding that advanced engineering can deliver both exceptional driving range and a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

The latest findings also highlight the widening sustainability gap between modern electric vehicles and traditional petrol-powered models, reinforcing the growing advantage of electrified mobility in the race toward cleaner transportation.
