Ford has launched a massive safety recall affecting more than 110,000 vehicles across the United States after regulators identified potentially dangerous defects involving windshield wipers and rear differential components.
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the automaker is recalling 110,626 vehicles in two separate campaigns covering different Mustang models.
The larger recall affects 67,842 Ford Mustang and Mustang GTD vehicles, where a fault could cause the windshield wipers to operate only at high speed in freezing weather. The defect may also prevent the windshield washer system from functioning properly, significantly reducing driver visibility during adverse weather conditions.
In a separate action, Ford is recalling 42,784 Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs over concerns that the rear differential pinion shaft could fracture while driving.
Regulators warned that the defect could result in a sudden loss of drive power or cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly if parked without the parking brake engaged, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
To address the problem, Ford dealers will inspect affected vehicles and repair or replace defective components free of charge, the NHTSA said.
The latest recall adds to a growing list of quality-related challenges confronting global automakers as manufacturers race to improve vehicle safety while expanding their portfolios of electric and high-performance vehicles.
