FG Set to Open Lagos–Calabar Coaster Highway Section One

The Federal Government will open Section One of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway to motorists by December 2025, Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has announced.

Umahi revealed this during an inspection of the 47.47-kilometre dual-carriageway, alongside senior ministry officials and executives of Hitech Construction Company Limited, the project contractor.

The 700-km coastal corridor will stretch from Victoria Island in Lagos to Calabar in Cross River State, cutting through Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

Addressing journalists after the tour, Umahi said construction was making “significant, measurable progress.” He explained that work slowed on some segments to allow proper subsoil settlement—an engineering step he described as essential for durability and long-term performance.

The minister praised Hitech for its “uncommon commitment,” saying the company’s dedication “goes far beyond financial incentives.”

He also disclosed that the project’s foreign loan component was oversubscribed by $100 million—evidence, he said, of investor confidence in the project’s economic prospects and the ministry’s transparent management.

Hitech Managing Director, Danny Aboud, reported steady sand filling across key swamp zones, with between 34 and 35 kilometres of Concrete Reinforced Cement Pavement (CRCP) already completed.

Beyond Section One, Umahi inspected a major flyover at Chainage 47.474, which will link Sections One and Two.
