Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have struck a major blow against illicit mining, arresting eight individuals and seizing six trucks loaded with suspected lithium and kaolin along the Ilorin–Ogbomoso corridor.
The crackdown, which took place on Saturday, February 20, 2026, followed days of meticulous surveillance and credible intelligence on rampant illegal mineral excavation and transportation in Kwara and Oyo states.
This latest swoop pushes the total number of suspects nabbed by the Ilorin Zonal Directorate for illegal mining in just one month to 18, highlighting a growing crackdown on the clandestine operations plaguing the region.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly carried out mining activities without the mandatory licences, permits, or regulatory approvals, flouting national laws.
The EFCC confirmed that the suspects will face court proceedings once ongoing investigations are concluded, signaling a stern warning to others involved in unlawful mineral extraction.
