NCS Vows To Procure Only Locally Produced Vehicles, As FG Reinstates Age Limits of Used Vehicles, Centralizes Automotive Database

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has vowed to prioritize the procurement of locally produced vehicles in 2025.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, made the disclosure at the Service (NCS) Headquarters in Abuja, recently during a courtesy visit to the Customs headquarter by Mr. Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, Director-General, National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC).

Speaking during the visit, Adeniyi, who emphasized the importance of inclusive stakeholder engagement in policy formulation, said NCS planned exclusive patronage of made in Nigeria vehicles is the service’s way of contributing to the growth of the nation’s auto industry.

Also speaking during the courtesy visit, the NADDC boss revealed a number of initiatives being embarked upon by the council towards boosting the growth of the auto industry.

According to him, as part of its strategic steps to accelerate the growth of the Nigerian Automotive Industry, the federal government of Nigeria is working on plans to initiate a centralized automotive database for registration and data collection.

Osanipin, who described the database as Nigerian Automotive Repository Platform (NARP), said its integration with the Customs’ B’Odogwu platform would ensure efficient and transparent processes.

He also said, in partnership with the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), NADDC is enforcing a requirement for a Certificate of Standard from exporting countries to curb the importation of unsafe and damaged vehicles.

“Nigeria,” he revealed, “has also concluded a plan to reinstate Age Limits on Used Vehicles.

“Reintroducing age limits on imported vehicles,” he pointed out, “is aimed at safeguarding consumers, the environment, and Nigeria’s local auto industry.”

In his response, the Comptroller General of NCS emphasized the importance of inclusive stakeholder engagement in policy formulation to ensure effective and sustainable implementation.

The meeting ended on a strong note of partnership, with both agencies pledging to deepen collaboration in the collective interest of advancing Nigeria’s automotive development.
