Nigeria’s drive toward cleaner, cheaper mobility has just hit the fast lane as the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG/EV) close ranks to supercharge the adoption of CNG and electric vehicles nationwide.
The high-level engagement saw NADDC’s Director-General, Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, host the Executive Chairman of Pi-CNG/EV, Ismaeel Ahmed, and his team at the Council’s Abuja headquarters, a meeting that signals a bold, coordinated push to reshape Nigeria’s mobility future.
At the heart of the talks? A powerful synergy aimed at aligning policies, scaling alternative fuel adoption, and unlocking rapid growth in Nigeria’s CNG and electric vehicle ecosystem. Both sides are zeroing in on data integration, capacity building, and aggressive market expansion, the critical building blocks for a nationwide mobility transformation.
Ahmed revealed that the initiative, launched in 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the fuel subsidy removal, has evolved into a multi-pronged engine driving sustainable transport alternatives. From gas-powered mobility to a growing electric vehicle push, the programme is tapping into Nigeria’s vast gas reserves while opening new frontiers in clean transportation.
He didn’t mince words on the urgency of collaboration: NADDC’s regulatory muscle and technical depth, combined with Pi-CNG/EV’s market-expansion mandate, form a potent alliance. Central to this is accurate, harmonised data, the fuel needed to drive policy precision and effective rollout.
With pilot schemes already laying the groundwork under NADDC’s guidance, the next phase is all about scale, rolling out training, certification, policy support, and market incentives to accelerate adoption across the country.
Osanipin, in response, reaffirmed NADDC’s commitment to pushing both EV and CNG penetration, while applauding recent strides in tackling gas supply bottlenecks, a key hurdle in Nigeria’s alternative fuel journey.
The message is clear: Nigeria isn’t just talking clean mobility anymore; it’s gearing up to deliver it at speed.
