European Cars Get the Most Love on Social Media

A new graphic reveals the top nine European vehicle manufacturers that are Instagram stars. The guys at EuroSport Tuning are European car enthusiasts, so they wanted to see how frequently European cars are posted on Instagram. To celebrate Valentine ’s Day, they’ve compiled their research and revealed just how much social media love these automakers receive.

“We live and breathe European cars,” says Frank Derks, director at EuroSport Tuning. “But we were surprised that European carmakers had more than 2 million more social media mentions than all the top global manufactures combined. I guess these cars’ sleek designs and fast looks just make you want to share more photos.”

Here’s some chart highlights at a glance:

  • Using 2016 sales numbers, the team discovered the top auto manufacturers for the year were Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, Honda, Nissan, Jeep, Hyundai, Kia and Subaru. These nine non-European carmakers represented 86,042,291 Instagram mentions.
  • The nine European manufacturers the graphic charts were mentioned in 88,084,337 hashtags. The mentions included decent numbers of Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin posts. Most likely, those posting photos of these two brands are those who covet, not those who own.
  • A more attainable European brand, BMW, ranked 16 in overall car sales for 2016, yet this brand was the focus of 26,554,212 Instagram mentions. This far surpassed Honda’s 20,976,403. Even though more Hondas than BMWs sold that year.
  • Despite earning 20th place in overall car sales, Audi comes in 4th in Instagram mentions. Audi’s hashtags are right behind Ferrari.

Reviewing the chart’s millions of hashtag mentions for Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and other European car makes, it is apparent that enthusiasts enjoy snapping and posting pics of their most loved brands. Do they really love these cars more than some folks love Ford trucks or do BMW fans just do social media a little better? Of course, Instagram post numbers are always changing but the love is still apparent.
