FG Targets over 1 billion Vehicles for fuel-to-Gas Conversion

…To Commission Solar EV Charging Stations in Lagos

To stem the problem of gas flaring, over one billion Nigeria vehicles being run on petrol or diesel are to be converted to run on gas.

The Director-General, National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Mr. Jelani Aliyu disclosed this recently at the opening of the 2021 Lagos Motor Fair.

According to him, special emphasis is being placed on vehicles run by gas, because Nigeria has a large reserve of gas, which is wasting.

‘’Just recently,” he recalled, “The Federal Government launched the National Gas Extension programme to see how to leverage that field. That is why special emphasis is being put on vehicles run by gas.’’

Jelani revealed that the federal government is starting a programme aimed at converting one billion Nigeria vehicles from petroleum and diesel to gas.

He stressed: “That is why we are excited that some of our stakeholders have started to produce gas vehicles. We want to encourage other stakeholders to start looking at autogas to power vehicles.’’

Meanwhile, in fulfillment of the promise made by NADDC when Hyundai Kona was launched in Abuja, Jelani said the federal government would soon commission Electric Vehicle charging stations in Lagos.

“Very soon,” he said, “we will commission Solar Battery Electric Charging Station in Lagos. NADDC is going beyond the production of electric vehicles to infrastructure. Nigeria can’t afford to be left behind.

‘’ We believe what has been done in other places can be replicated here. It is not a tall order at all. It is something Nigerians committed to Nigeria development can always do.’’

On the revised Nigerian Automotive Industrial Development Plan (NAIDP), he said, ‘’the update is that we are done with the draft. We are looking at the final draft and once it is out, we are sure it will pass through this time as an executive bill.

“The beauty of it is that we have investors and stakeholders; even as we face challenges and working towards the review, they have invested billions of naira in Nigeria’s automotive sector. They invested in the sector because they believe in the betterment of Nigeria.”
