Chinese SUVs Take Center Stage in Race for 2025 Nigeria Car-of-the-Year

Nigeria’s auto market is set for a showdown as three Chinese SUVs — Changan CS55, Jetour Dashing, and Chery Tiggo 8 — vie for the 2025 Nigeria Car-of-the-Year crown, underscoring a major shift in the nation’s fast-evolving automotive landscape.

The shortlist was announced Thursday by the Nigeria Auto Journalists’ Association (NAJA), highlighting vehicles that combine innovation, durability, and strong market appeal.

The Changan CS55, last year’s winner over the Toyota Corolla and Kia Rio, seeks to defend its title. Yet analysts warn that competition is tougher than ever, as Jetour Dashing and Chery Tiggo 8 gain increasing traction with Nigerian buyers.

The 2025 NAJA International Auto Awards will hold on Tuesday, December 16, at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, starting at 6pm. The event is regarded as Nigeria’s most credible celebration of automotive excellence, drawing top government officials, industry leaders, and the media.

“For the first time, Chinese manufacturers are not just competing — they are leading the pack,” said Theodore Opara, NAJA Chairman. “These three shortlisted brands reflect how dynamic the Nigerian automotive industry has become.”

NAJA’s Awards Committee evaluated entries based on innovation, durability, and suitability for Nigerian driving conditions.

Full nominees for other categories — including vehicle assembly, electrification, aftersales, heavy-duty trucks, transport services, and luxury mobility — will be announced in the coming days.

“Preparations are in top gear to sustain NAJA’s reputation as the most credible platform for recognizing automotive excellence,” said Frank Kintum, Chairman of the Awards Planning Committee. “From EVs to local assembly, our awards reflect the rapidly evolving industry.”

The event will host NADDC DG Joseph Oluwemimo Osanipin and the FRSC Corps Marshal as Special Guests of Honour. Osanipin is expected to outline the Council’s long-term vision for local assembly and EV adoption, while the FRSC boss will promote road safety among industry stakeholders.
