Nigeria’s First Locally Assembled Electric Car: FG Woos Lawmakers

The Federal government of Nigeria early this week introduced the nation’s first locally assembled Electric vehicle, the Hyundai Kona to the nation’s House of Representatives.

Witnessed by the members of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Public Accounts, the unveiling was performed by the Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Aliyu Jelani at the premises of the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

Addressing the lawmakers, Jelani said the good thing about the EV is that it does not need petrol or diesel.

According to him, in addition to coming with loads of safety, comfort, and equipment available in petrol/diesel vehicles, Hyundai Kona Electric would cover 480 kilometers on a full charge.

He explained: “It takes about eight to 10 hours to charge. It can also be plugged onto a fast charger that cuts charging time by 50%, to about four to five hours. There is even a super-super charger that brings its charging time down to one hour or less.”

“You don’t need to line up at the filling station waiting for fuel. Once you charge it, you have about 482km of electric charge. No emission. No smoke. Very quiet. And the electric car has very far less power than the traditional petrol engine.”

And responding to an affordability question asked by the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Benjamin Kalu, Aliyu said the Federal government was working with a number of Nigerian banks to render auto finance service, aimed at creating affordability and increasing sales volume, which he said would lead to a price reduction of all locally manufactured or assembled vehicles.

“For the common man, we are working with three domestic banks, namely Wema, Jaiz, and Zenith banks to provide single-digit financing for ‘Made-in-Nigeria’ vehicles or locally Assembled vehicles”.
