The roar of close to 150 of South Africa’s most jaw-dropping cars is getting closer, as the Speed Classic Cape Town prepares to take over the Mother City for two days of intense motorsport action on 25 and26 October.
Set against the iconic backdrop of Table Mountain on Phillip Kgosana Drive, the Speed Classic Cape Town combines high-octane hillclimb racing with an exclusive lifestyle experience. Featuring a collection of cars worth more than R500 million in total, the two-day showcase promises an unmatched celebration of speed and style.
The inaugural Speed Classic Cape Town also marks the revival of Cape Town’s hillclimb legacy, bringing back a motorsport tradition that started in 1912, which saw drivers test their skills on Camps Bay Drive, Signal Hill Road and Kloof Road.
Backed by the City of Cape Town and sanctioned by Motorsport South Africa, the event will feature two exclusive invitational hillclimbcompetitions across Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, 25 October, Classic Car Saturday will showcase the jewels of the motoring world, celebrating vintage engineering and elegant design. Competing in different classes, historic racing cars – with some of the oldest speed machines in contention hailing from the early 1900s – will showcase the enduring quality of precision early engineering.
The spotlight then shifts to pure speed on Sunday, 26 October, in the King of the Mountain showdown. Modern supercars and high-performance racing machines will return to the 1.8km of twisting tarmac to compete for glory.
“There is nothing that has as much variety and is as accessible, where you will be that close to the track. Spectators will be only a few metres away from cars that could potentially reach an eye-watering 300km/h. You just do not get that in any other form of motorsport,” says event co-founder Garth Mackintosh.
Set in the heart of Cape Town, the Speed Classic Cape Town is an event that invites all Capetonians to experience the thrill of hillclimb racing. With stylish hospitality lounges, grandstand seating close to the start, the ability to view the race along most of the course, and a fan village offering comfortable seating, food, bars and entertainment, the event promises something for everyone.
“We are building an event for all of Cape Town, where spectators can come have fun and enjoy motorsport action up close, and where those seeking a more exclusive experience can socialise in the VIP hospitality lounge,” adds Mackintosh.
