The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lugbe Unit Command, has identified indiscriminate parking of vehicles and non-use of pedestrian bridges by the people as major challenges bedeviling road safety.
The unit commander, Mr Ohaeri Osondu said this at the inauguration of 2021 ember months campaign on Tuesday in Abuja.
The theme of this year’s ember months campaign is: “Maintain Safe Speed: Avoid Night Travels and Enjoy Quality Road Experience”.
Osondu noted that the campaign was part of the sustained efforts by the FRSC to step up efforts towards reducing the spate of road accidents commonly witnessed during the ember season.
He said that ember months came with traffic peculiarities which often resulted in an increase in road accidents.
This he said was with attendant consequences on the nation’s socio-economic growth as human and material resources were lost through avoidable accidents.
He said that the theme was deliberately designed to draw the attention of all road users especially motorists to the need to comply with recommended speed limit for vehicles.
According to him, Lugbe airport road is a major corridor that conveys top government officers, diplomats, foreigners and other members of the motoring public.
“Indiscriminate parking of vehicles and non-use of the pedestrian remains our major concern as people are being crushed by speeding vehicles on regular basis on Lugbe expressway.
“Drivers do not park well and they end up creating a serious traffic challenge for us.
“Another issue is where pedestrians do not use the bridge. People die on a daily basis. This is worrisome.
“In one month, we pick bodies and almost seven were picked. This is a big challenge to use as people do not use the pedestrian bridge.
“We are deeply concerned about this ugly trend and we will not rest on our oars to restore sanity on Lugbe road,” he said.
Osondu urged all categories of road users to obey traffic rules and regulations to complement concerted efforts by the FRSC to cut down on road accidents by the end of the year.
He said that the corps was collaborating with other sister agencies to ensure the safety of people, lives and property.
He implored numerous stakeholders in the transport sectors to see road safety as everybody’s business, saying “with your support, we can bring down the road traffic crashes”.
The Head of Operations, Zonal Command, Mr Frank Agbakoba, appealed to the public to imbibe good road culture to avert road accidents in the territory.
Agbakoba also urged parents to educate the young ones by catching them young, adding that the future of road safety would be secured.
