As a way of alleviating the hardship that shippers experienced due to last week’s EndSARS protest, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) and shipping companies are considering removal of demurrage on cargoes.
The council’s Head of Public Relations, Mrs Rakiya Zubairu, who disclosed this in a statement released on Monday, assured that activities at the Lagos – Apapa Port was gradually returning to normal.
“Nigeria Shippers Council,” she said, “is working with shipping companies to find ways to ease the hardship occasioned by the disruptions.
“Several discussions were taking place between the leadership of the council and shipping companies in Nigeria to find a way to accelerate clearing of cargoes from the terminals and collection of the same by shippers, who were unable to access the ports.”
Zubairu also disclosed that the Executive Secretary of NSC, Mr. Hassan Bello, planned to visit some terminals to fine-tune discussions of the waiver and other issues.
