SUV Lovers Prefer Toyota Brand – Report

FEMI OWOEYE

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] market-leading tally of 9,601 unit sales by Toyota South Africa afforded the company a market share of 23% for May, the highest in five months. This sales total places Toyota 3,215 units ahead of its closest peer, with 90% of sales transactions recorded on dealership floors.

Once again, SUVs reigned supreme for Toyota with 2,150 SUV sales logged for the month. Fortuner and RAV4 models accounted for the bulk of Toyota SUV sales which consequently ranked as the best-sellers in the large- and medium-SUV segments, with 1,249 and 520 units retailed for the two models, respectively.

According to Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing, ‘’the buyer trend favouring the ride height, interior space, comfort and style of SUVs at the expense of traditional passenger cars appears unstoppable and is set to accelerate with the recent launch of dynamically competent crossovers such as the C-HR.”

“This is reinforced by the rock-solid reputation of Toyotas in terms of quality, reliability and resale value – vitally important in these economically testing times,” Calvyn said.

Another noteworthy statistic gleaned from the May report is Toyota’s 32,2% share of the LCV market, with Hilux being the main contributor, thanks to a robust 2,758 units finding new homes during the month.

On the premium front, Lexus retailed a total of 78 units with the sporty NX SUV garnering the lion share of the sales (21).

Hino achieved a 22% market share in the MCV segment, an increase of 1,5% on the April 2017 result.
