Readers’ Comments: Re-WHY Are Senators at War with Nigeria Custom Service?

OCHIKIRI SYLVANUS OCHIKIRI

You are very correct in your analysis, but be careful how you argue. In the first place, it is the NCS that mans the outpost where these vehicles are smuggled through. It is the FRSC that registers the vehicles, and it is the VIO that licenses them.

All of them are high tensile government vehicle control agencies. How come they waited for an Ali, a retired soldier to come and unearth these discrepancies? From what period to which period are we looking at.

As much as the hands of our senators may not be totally clean to go to equity, you cannot demonize them in the blanket manner in which your argument is proceeding. The issue of Ali’s custom uniform disloyalty started long before this matter of smuggled motor vehicles without proper duty payments commenced. Are you sure these same custom men did not collect egunje on the vehicles and shearing and pocketing the returns so as to remain at lucrative border post to continue perpetuating these malfeasance?

Who says Ali cannot wear a customs uniform? Is the man bigger than the institution of the NCS? or are you saying because he is an appointee of the president then he must act in defiance of the extant laws and norms of corporate SOP of the institution he is charged with their responsibilities?

How many times has the government put in place a deliberate policies for her various organs to patronize made in Nigeria goods, whether vehicles or other operating systems? The only time I can remember was during Obasanjo’s military regime where he decreed that government officials must use Peugeot made in Nigerian assembled 504 cars, since then, nothing.

Please you are encouraging Ali to defy constituted authority that is bigger than him, which is most likely to create a constitutional rift between the executive and the legislature. Because you favor Ali today, you are supporting his undisciplined action of refusing to wear the customs uniform, setting a wrong precedence.

I am surprised that an Ali, a retired soldier for that matter could be so undisciplined to create the kind of ego tripping rift he is causing. We should be ashamed of our actions because as role models or elites, people are watching our every action, and our children are noticing too.

Let us build this nation out of patriotism and selflessness please.
