The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi has expressed the Corps ‘preparedness to checkmate over-speeding on the Lagos-Ibadan Express road, when it is completed in 2022.
Oyeyemi gave the hint in his acceptance speech, following his conferment with the Road Safety personality of the Decade award at the 2021 edition of the Nigeria Auto Journalist Association’s Auto Industry Awards held in Lagos.
He warned that once completed next year, commercial vehicles shall be required to install a speed limiter before plying the road.
Already, according to him, the Corps is working proactively on dealing with the issue of speed on Nigerian highways, which he says, account for most carnages on the roads.
‘’ We really need to address the issue of speed by especially enforcing the implementation of speed limiters,” Oyeyemi stressed, adding, “a lot of lives have been lost on our roads as a result of speed. By the time that Lagos- Ibadan Express Way is completed next year, every commercial driver must fit their speed limiter. Failure to do that will lead to the impounding of their vehicles.
‘’ With new entrance of vehicles and the effort of the government to improve on the road network, there is the need to look at the issue of road management and administration.
“We believe speed would be a worrying issue when the road is fully operational next year. Therefore, there is a need to prepare for enforcement in order to curtail speed on that road.
Oyeyemi thanked the organizers for counting him worthy of the award, admonished motoring journalists to keep the issues of road safety on the front burner of their reporting and educate the motoring public on the specification of vehicles that enhance safe driving.
The annual event, which was held recently at Eko Hotel and Suites, had Auto companies CEOs and auto industry stakeholders in attendance.
