SPY Number Plates Now Banned in Nigeria – IG

ROTIMI ASHER

To forestall the continuous disregard for traffic rules and strengthen internal security, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Usman Baba has banned the use of SPY number plates by motorists nationwide.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by Police Public Relations, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, it is now illegal for any vehicles owner to use SPY number plates.

Baba said, ‘’ the ban is applicable to every motorist including VIP. No one is exempted from the ban,’’

He said, ‘’ some individuals are hiding under the privilege of SPY police number plates to continuously disregard extant laws guiding road use.’’

‘’Police officers and other security agents attached to VIPS are directed to comply with the directives or risk being arrested for violation. Commissioner of Police across the states and the FCT, and their Supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) should give full effect to the directive,’’ Baba said.

While directing the AIGs and CPs to ensure confiscation of all SPY plate numbers currently in use without arrest of owners of such vehicles, he said, ‘’ arrest could be made when such vehicles were with the police officers or officers of other security agencies on escort duties.’’

He urged police officers to respect the rights and privileges of citizens in line with laws of the land and in accordance with international best practices in carrying out their assignment.

Baba called on other security agencies and the public to cooperate with the police in enforcing the ban.
