Osinbajo Raises Hope On the Completion of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

ROTIMI ASHER

The Vice-President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo says, there is progress being made on the completion of Lagos-Ibadan highway in relation to issues around the movement of goods and services on that corridor.

In a statement made available  early this week, the Vice-President spokesperson, LaoluAkande said, ‘’ Osinbajo disclosed to newsmen after the 61st Ordinary Session of the Economic Community of West African States in Ghana that some of the very important decision has been taken about the highway since Lagos-Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway is part of the Trans-African Highway within the ECOWAS region

At the ECOWAS session where President SissocoEmbalo of Guinea Bissau assumed chairmanship of the regional body, Vice-President Osinbajo said, ‘’there were high expectations regarding the output of the body and the leaders must work harder to resolve lingering issues in the region.’’

According to him, ‘’ President Nana Akufo-Addo did an excellent job in a very challenging period in the history of ECOWAS and many of the challenges remain,’’ adding that, ‘’ the new leadership is expected to work harder and perhaps much harder to resolve some of the issues.’’

‘’There are even additional challenges today, economic challenges, especially with the Russian-Ukraine crisis and other economic problems. Other issues are coups that have taken place in the region in the past couple of years and we are still trying to resolve some of those issues.’’

Osinbajo said, ‘’ the new leadership under President SissocoEmbalo must step up efforts and address those very many responsibilities that the region faces today.’’

He said, ‘’ besides the challenges, the region was witnessing appreciable progress in the ECOWAS common currency policy. Also, there is progress being made on the Lagos-Ibadan Corridor, some of the issues around the movement of goods and services.

Speaking earlier, Akufo- Addo while commending President Muhammadu Buhari said, ‘’ the efforts and commitment of Nigeria under him in containing the Covid-19 pandemic and in addressing other challenges across the region were appreciated.

He said, ‘’ Nigeria’s leadership role in addressing other challenges across the region, especially the menace of coups, terrorism and deteriorating humanitarian situation is also recognized.
