Motorists Driving Against Traffic to Undergo Psychiatric Test – FRSC

By:ROTIMI ASHER

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t will no longer be business as usual for motorists, who drive against traffic, as the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) has directed its officers to apprehend, arrest and subject culprits to psychiatric test.

The  Lagos Zonal Commander of FRSC, Lagos, Assistant Corps Marshal Nseobong Akpabio, disclosed this to Motoring World  during an exclusive interview at the Corps’ Lagos Zonal headquarter last week.

The Zonal Commander, who recalled how his officers used to battle with motorists driving against traffic along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, said arrangement had been made with the Aro Psychiatric Hospital, in Ogun State to conduct necessary test on any erring motorist apprehended.

Aro Hospital 1“We can no longer tolerate such lawlessness,” he warned, adding, “I have told my officers and men to henceforth apprehend any driver found driving against traffic and be made to go to psychiatric hospital for evaluation.”

The Assistant Corps Marshal described driving against traffic, as being akin to suicide attempt.

“It is tantamount to an attempt to commit suicide for any driver to drive against traffic,” he pointed out. “And I don’t believe anybody with no special psychological problem will attempt a suicide, which is why it is now compulsory for any driver caught doing so to go through psychiatric evaluation and the vehicle impounded until that person is cleared by a government psychiatrist. Otherwise he will have to remain there

When asked who pays the bill, he answered: ” The person (the driver) will pay for it. It is even better for the person to go and get the evaluation that he is insane. He must bring the evaluation paper stamped and signed by the government psychiatrist.”
