Appearing before magistrates, the man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was banned from driving for 16 months, fined £150 and ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £20 victim surcharge, Cambridge News reported. The motorist, who lives in St Ives, was born on January 29, 1922 – predating both the BBC and the front-loading washing machine. He takes the crown as Britain’s oldest driver from Suffolk local David Bye, who was 88 when police collared him after witnessing him drive his Skoda erratically.

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said: “Driving while under the influence of alcohol puts not only the driver, but other roads users at serious risk of harm. All drivers, regardless of age or driving experience must comply with the law.

“Motorists found to be driving while under the influence of drink or drugs face a minimum of a 12-month disqualification from driving, as well as a fine and/or imprisonment.” The number of drink drivers caught in Cambridgeshire has been in stead decline since 2010, when 1,118 motorists were arrested. Last year that number was down to 722.

According to Department for Transport statistics, motorists most likely to drink and drive were aged 20-24.
